Mainstream science journalism, with notable exceptions, still fails to communicate what’s at stake and who is most vulnerable.
We commissioned three stories concentrating on the shortcomings of journalism as an institution — and how journalists can do better.
The Objective’s Science Series was made possible by a Peggy Girshman Idea Grant from the National Association of Science Writers. The grant supported writers examining how the routines and conventions of science journalism — including traditional ideas of objectivity — can fail or exclude marginalized communities, and how science reporting can better serve the people it covers.
